Take Home TCM Series: Moxabustion 101 – with Christina Chan
When: Wed. 2 February 2:00pm
Where: Heart and Hands Health Centre, 851 Cormorant St.
Chinese style moxabustion or “moxa” consists of mugwort (Artemesia vulgaris) rolled into a cigar-like stick. This stick is ignited and the heat from the stick is indirectly applied over regions of the body or specific acupuncture points. Moxa has properties to warm the acupuncture meridians (heat can often be felt traveling along channels), stimulate circulation of qi and blood, boosts vitality and opens pores or collaterals. It has been traditionally used on specific acupuncture points during the changes of season to boost immunity and prevent illnesses such as the common cold and flu.
Moxabustion is especially ideal in climates such as ours on Vancouver Island, which is generally characterized as windy, cold and damp for most of the year. It can help warm up and dry out our bodies, wonderful for deficiency (fatigue, weakness, cold body temperature, pale complexion, weak digestion) as well as general aches and pains that are chronic in nature. Specifically for gynaecologic conditions, it is also effective for treating menstrual pain and cramping as well as irregular menstrual flow. Moxabustion also plays a role in many other traditional medical systems of Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Tibet and Mongolia.
All materials and hand-outs will be provided. The therapies covered in this workshop are on a skill-share basis ONLY (intended for self-care) and should not be taught to others nor used to replace primary medical care. (Suggested donation of $5/participant welcomed to cover cost of materials)

Consent is Cool Even on Valentines – with heart-throbs J&S
When: Thursday 14 Feb. 6:30pm
Where: Camas Books
On wikipedia I just read that romance wasn’t associated with the Feast of St. Valentine, what transformed into Feb 14th’s commodity orgy, until the 14th century when poet Chaucer schemed it up! This isn’t a conversation about the history of Valentine’s day, but we’re gonna be making some Valentines. Only these aren’t the kind of well-wishings innuendos you can pick up at the hallmark outlet. Mine will be inspired by a radical conversation about consent, and why it is important to practice the language of choosing and choices. Fuck ya, I like choices, also I like making crafts.

Oil Spills 101: Community Response and Grassroots Bioremediation
When: Thursday 21 Feb. 6:30pm
Where: Camas Books
With both Kinder Morgan and Enbridge seeking to push forward (or expand) their tar sands pipelines and increase tanker traffic on the coast, the threat of a big oil spill is a growing concern for many communities. Pipeline bursts and leaks, truck accidents, tanker spills – when these disasters strike, most of us are left watching from afar wishing there was some way we could help as the situation goes from bad to worse.
This info share hopes to explore some of the ways that rad folks with wild hearts can skill up and step up when it comes to community oil spill response and recovery. Depending on time and collective interest, we’ll tackle the following:
- Oil Spills 101 (what happens in an oil spill, how different forms of oil react, what to expect in a tar sands/bitumen spill, how government and industry responds (the good, the bad, and the ugly)
- Community organizing and grassroots bioremediation response to oil spills and hydrocarbon contamination
- De-oiling wildlife
- Health impacts, self-care, community care, and detox for spill responders and impacted communities (personal protective gear, herbal allies for toxic exposure and more)
